There are three different things "M-Pesa integration" can mean
Before comparing products, it helps to know what's actually possible on Safaricom's side. Most POS systems in Kenya fall into one of three tiers:
- Manual entry. The cashier tells the customer a Paybill or Till number, the customer pays, and the cashier manually types the M-Pesa confirmation code into the system. No automation — just a place to record what happened.
- STK Push (Lipa na M-Pesa Online). The till sends a payment prompt directly to the customer's phone via Safaricom's Daraja API. The customer enters their PIN, and the sale confirms automatically in the software — no manual code entry, no "did they actually pay?" guesswork.
- Till/Paybill with automatic reconciliation. Payments land on an existing Till or Paybill number, and the software polls or receives callbacks to match incoming payments to open sales.
Only the second and third actually save time at the counter. If a vendor says "M-Pesa integration" without specifying which one, ask directly — it's the single biggest functional difference between products that otherwise look identical in a demo.

Questions worth asking before you buy
1. What happens if the internet drops mid-sale?
M-Pesa itself needs connectivity, but the rest of your till shouldn't stop working because of a bad link. Ask whether the software can still ring up cash sales, check stock, and print receipts while offline — and whether it queues M-Pesa prompts to retry, or just fails silently.
2. Does the receipt actually reflect what was paid?
Split payments (part cash, part M-Pesa) are common at Kenyan counters. Confirm the receipt and end-of-day report break this down correctly rather than lumping everything into one payment method.
3. Who holds the Daraja credentials?
STK Push requires a Safaricom Daraja app registration tied to your business's Paybill or Till number. Some vendors host this centrally and take a cut of every transaction; others let you register your own Daraja credentials so payments go straight to your account. Know which model you're buying into — it affects both cost and how much you depend on the vendor staying in business.
4. How is a Z-Report reconciled against M-Pesa's own statement?
At month-end, your accountant will compare the till's records against the actual M-Pesa statement from Safaricom. Ask to see a sample Z-Report and confirm it separates M-Pesa sales clearly enough to reconcile in minutes, not hours.
